ANYbotics, the Swiss robotics company, is launching a new end-to-end robotic inspection solution for operators of energy and industrial processing plants. While demand for lower downtime and better safety increases on production sites, technologies have not yet caught up with the complex structures of industrial facilities. ANYbotics’ new fully autonomous four-legged robot ANYmal and its inspection analytics software provide a scalable solution to automate routine condition monitoring of equipment and infrastructure. The company has started onboarding early customers to bring robotic inspection into their facilities and is rolling out installations later this year.
Autonomous mobile robots entering industrial facilities
Up-to-date and reliable data on the equipment’s health is essential for effective and efficient industrial operations. In a condition monitoring process, inspection data is collected and analyzed, and provides the insights to trigger corrective actions to optimize operational uptime, performance, and quality. Even with IoT devices, full inspection coverage cannot be reached, as fixed-installed sensors will at some point stop scaling — both with regards to installation efforts and device cost. For this reason, plant operators manually perform routine inspection rounds multiple times a day, often in unpleasant or potentially hazardous settings. Fortunately, robotics technology has matured in recent years to provide an automated and fully digital inspection solution.
Bridging the complexity of robotic integration
It is no surprise that we are only these days seeing mobile robots conquer sites in the energy, processing, and construction industries. These environments consist of complex structures with steep stairs and tight spaces unsuited for traditional wheel- and track-based robots. Walking robots represent a unique alternative to reliably navigate these facilities as they can traverse rugged terrain that is built for humans. However, mobility is not the only challenge. A robotic inspection solution must work autonomously and provide the sensors and intelligence to detect any irregularities with the equipment or infrastructure. According to a recent SPRINT Robotics survey, the complexity of this full integration in the existing processes is currently one of the major barriers to the adoption of robotic inspection.
ANYbotics’ new autonomous inspection solution is on the move
ANYbotics has been working with industrial customers for the last five years to enable the integration of robotics in their inspection routines. Today, ANYbotics launches its first certified commercial product as part of its integrated end-to-end robotic inspection solution. The new ANYmal D provides users an autonomous system with advanced condition monitoring capabilities. The robot provides large-scale autonomy, including obstacle avoidance and self-charging via a docking station for routine inspection tasks without human intervention. The pan-tilt inspection unit features high-end sensors for accurate and reliable visual, thermal, and acoustic measurements, as well as inspection intelligence software covering some of the most relevant industrial inspection tasks. Built for harsh environments, the robot is IP67 water- and dust-proof ingress protected for use in indoor and outdoor environments in all weather conditions.
Bringing robots onsite made easier
Adopting a robotic workforce can be a daunting task for operators, as the journey can be long and difficult if not set up correctly. ANYbotics has been building up the resources, tools, and support services to enable successful robot commissioning and onboarding. Acting as a single point-of-contact, ANYbotics’ experts closely work with the customer in evaluating the tasks to be automated and prepare the organization for the deployment of autonomous mobile inspection robots. The team checks the feasibility and impact in simulations, on-site demonstrations, and long-term pilot deployments. Once the implementation roadmap is established, the team trains the customer in commissioning and supports in scaling the system throughout their facilities.

In celebrating our 50th anniversary at Hall Telecommunications Supply Ltd., we want to acknowledge the contributions of people who helped shape who we are. Last month, we shared the story of our Founder, Iolanda Maugeri-Hall.
Today, we want to share the story of our longest-serving President, Don Beam. Don was with Hall for over 30 years, and his contributions to both the technical and personal sides of Hall are immeasurable.
Don grew up one-hour southwest of Guelph in the small farming community of Hickson, Ontario. He attended the University of Guelph and, in 1968, graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering degree. After graduating, Don joined IBM as a systems engineer, holding various technical, sales, marketing and support positions over a 21-year career.
Don’s first introduction to Hall came while working for Deskin Sales as their Country Communications and Industry Manager in the early 1990s. He had known Iolanda, Hall’s founder, from his time at university and reconnected with her while working at Deskin Sales. When Hall was going through a challenging time, Iolanda convinced Don to join Hall as the Vice President of Sales in June 1991.
Hall was already known for having a strong reputation as an industry leader in new technology introductions and a go-to company that helps you find solutions for difficult applications. With Don’s years of experience at IBM and other companies, he was brought in to help Hall strengthen its internal processes and support technologies (IT).
Under his guidance, Hall developed the first online ordering system in our industry. This system connected over 2000 technicians and their managers and enabled them to order materials and track shipments. Management could also run the various purchase history reports as they saw fit. As part of this system, Don also brought together transportation companies that would guarantee overnight deliveries to these technicians, allowing them to start their day immediately, another first.
In addition, he developed Hall’s internal system to work with sales, procurement, and finance so that all managers could quickly access information to assist them in evaluating their progress and highlighting potential problem areas.
In 1999, Don was made President of Hall Telecommunications. During his time as President, he oversaw the implementation of a robust IT system. This was critical in facilitating the ever-changing client and vendor requirements. Decisions were made from accurate data. Don also significantly improved Hall’s credibility with our customers, suppliers, and financial institutions. His integrity and honour were more important than making a dollar at someone else’s expense.
He helped develop our current internal culture and provided stable and consistent leadership as President for 24 years. He led by example, and there was no job or task he wouldn’t do himself or help do. Don created a workplace where people felt they had a home and everyone’s opinion was heard and mattered.
Don countered the traditional thinking of keeping certain business information hidden. He ensured all employees could see and track the results of the business, including profit margins, which were key in supporting the profit-sharing plan he implemented for all the employees. In his final year, he also instituted a pension plan for all Hall employees. These are all implementations that are still found at Hall today.
When Don retired on January 1, 2023, he was Hall’s longest-standing President. Just as Iolanda did, Don left his mark on Hall. His vision, integrity, intelligence, unselfish giving of his time, and commitment to all aspects of the business and staff will likely never be matched. Don, Hall cannot thank you enough. Without you, Hall would not be here today to mark our 50th anniversary. Thank you for your leadership.
Our Story: Iolanda Maugeri-Hall
As Hall Telecommunications celebrates its 50th anniversary, we also want to celebrate the people and partnerships we have built. Today, we celebrate our founder, Iolanda Maugeri-Hall, the heart and soul of Hall Telecommunications. Iolanda founded Hall in 1974, and her passion and relationship skills are still a driving force behind everything Hall Telecommunications does.
Iolanda was born in San Giorgio, Calabria, Italy, and immigrated to Canada as a young girl with her sister Rita and her parents, Natalina and Cosimo. The family settled in Guelph, which became their new home. Iolanda’s greatest strengths were her ability to read people and build relationships. At a time when women were to be at home, not in business, she was a trailblazer. She started her own business, which would grow to become Hall Telecommunications.
Initially seeing an opportunity to refurbish used telephones, Iolanda founded GW Hall (now Hall Telecommunications) in 1974. In the early 1970s the telecommunications industry was a male-dominated industry. For this reason, Iolanda’s then-husband was made president of GW Hall. Despite not being the public face of the organization, Iolanda effectively managed the business behind the scenes. Under her leadership, Hall Telecommunications rapidly grew, becoming the largest privately held telephony distributor in Canada by the late 1970s
In the mid-1980s, both Iolanda and Hall faced significant challenges. Following her separation from her husband, Iolanda was ousted from her own company. Demonstrating resilience, she fought to regain control and succeeded in 1985. A few years later, Hall encountered another setback when a key supplier bypassed the company to distribute directly to the market. Despite these challenges, Iolanda continued to strengthen and build her internal team and relationships with vendors.
As Iolanda continued to grow the business, she ran into Don Beam, whom she had met 25 years earlier while he was studying at the University of Guelph. They soon married, and Iolanda invited Don to join the business as the Vice President of Sales.
In 1999, Iolanda passed the torch to her husband, Don, who became the President of Hall Telecommunications. With over 20 years of industry experience, Don recognized the future potential of the internet, VOIP and interconnection technologies. Under his leadership, Hall became more than a phone, intercom, and parts supplier.
He implemented a strategic philosophy focused on observing, listening, and understanding the rapidly changing market needs.
Today, Hall continues to evolve with the telecommunications industry offering three primary product lines: Outside plant, Customer Premise and Special Needs Products – focusing on individuals with hearing, sight, and mobility impairments. Working with over 300 vendors, Hall’s success stems from the customer – they are the heart of what we do. We are committed to delivering the right product, to the right location, at the right price, and we pride ourselves on being on time – every time.
After Iolanda passed away in 2018, the Iolanda Maugeri-Hall Business Scholarship was established in her honour. The scholarship commemorates her passion for business and belief in education. It is awarded to a student pursuing a post-secondary education in a business-related field who demonstrates respect for others and their community.
Iolanda will always be a part of Hall Telecommunications. Her legacy lives on through the business she founded and the lives she touched.
